As judged by its readers, the esteemed Travel + Leisure magazine has deemed Charleston the No. 1 U.S. city for the sixth year in a row.
The accolades didn’t stop there. Charleston also made the publication’s list of World’s Top 15 Cities. Coming in at No. 10 on the list, it was the only U.S. city to make the cut this year.
How do we do it? “Charleston keeps winning because it doesn’t just tout its history — it’s always coming up with something new.” wrote Travel + Leisure Editor in Chief Nathan Lump.
“This is a city not content to rest on its laurels as one of the most beautiful and well-preserved historic urban environments in the country,” Lump goes on to say. “Thanks to a creative local population intent on creating world-class experiences, there is always something new and exciting going on here, from a vibrant cultural scene to innovative food and drink to fresh takes on style and design.”
Our humble Holy City is in good company. Other Southeast destinations that made T+L’s short list were New Orleans (No. 2), Savannah (No. 3), Asheville (No. 8) and Nashville (No. 9).
Moving on up, T+L’s readers also picked Kiawah Island as the nation’s No. 3 island destination, up from No. 10 last year.
As quoted by the Post & Courier, Linn Lesesne, Board Chair of the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, called the latest distinction, “a reminder that Charleston’s charm shines brightly through its people, historic streetscape, award-winning restaurants, world-class accommodations, pristine beaches, culture and shopping scene.”
We may be a little biased but couldn’t agree more! It’s a joy getting our guests’ take on their Charleston experience – although each visitor brings different interests and plans to their vacation, we hear the same “wows” over and over again. There is a notable respect for our community’s commitment to history and preservation along with an unabashed appreciation for our innovation and creativity.
